Happy Friday, Love!
How has March been treating you so far? More importantly, what tastes have been tantalizing your taste buds this week?
As for me, this week has been teaching me to listen to and honor my body. That sometimes means ignoring my desire to make every meal a gourmet adventure and being content with feeding my family because I physically don't have the bandwidth to get fancy. I woke up with a sinus headache yesterday that kept me unable to work or stand up long enough to concentrate much less cook.
Needless to say, this week's issue is about outlandish food content that I've found on the internet and watched from bed. I'm focusing on a few videos that left me scratching my head. I need to share them with you so that we can have a collective WTF moment.
Without further ado, pull up a chair and some snacks...
WTF Food Videos…
Blasphemous Black Cake
If you're an avid reader of RECIPE'D, you know I love the Buzzfeed Try series. The most recent episode that I watched was produced by Buzzfeed UK and entitled "Trini Mums Try Each Other’s Black Cake." Now, you know I'm Trini and I HAD to watch.
If you're unaware, Black Cake is Trini fruit and rum cake. The dried fruits are soaked in liquor for up to a year, blended up and combined with butter, sugar, and flour to make a rich, dense cake that is dark brown or Black. Hence, the name.
What got me about this video is that one of the ladies completely disregarded the traditional methods of making the cake. Sis turned up with a fruit sponge cake--the thing had all the light-skinned privilege. And, she was outraged that her blasphemous Black Cake didn't win. It's the audacity for me! Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
IKYFL...COLLARED FOR COLLARDS
Next up, is a video by a content creator whose mom's cooking gives me anxiety and secondhand embarrassment. Every time I come across one of his videos, I hold my breath because I know I'm going to be outraged. This week, his mom "cooked" collard greens and Black ancestors everywhere collectively rolled over in their graves. It’s too chaotic to describe, so watch it yourself and let me l know if it prompted a panic attack for you too.

TRIGGER WARNING: This is disturbing…
I’m all for finding innovative ways to cook, but some things are just dumb. However, there is a subsection of the internet and let’s just be real—humanity— that are committed to doing dumb ish for attention. Watching a young woman take unwashed, unseasoned chicken drumsticks and stick them between the slots of a baking sheet to drip onto a tray of chopped veg, triggered me. Let me know what you think!
WTF! right?! That’s all I got this week, ain’t got no more! If you liked, loved, or hated this issue be sure to share it with your friends and family so that you can do so in community.
Until we meet again, take care of yourself and eat as well as possible.
XOXO,
Mel
